Star Wars “The Force Awakens” was somewhat Disappointing

The new Star Wars The Force Awakens film was entertaining and humorous at times, but left me a bit frustrated and puzzled. I did enjoy seeing past familiar characters from past episodes popping up here and there, and the added humor (that lacked in the others) kept this film amusing.

With all that said, I was disappointed and frustrated with the lack of back stories to some of these characters. Look, I don’t need wasted film time spent on an elaborate back story in every situation, but I certainly don’t want to be left with a boat load of questions when I leave the theater. Let me sum up where my frustration stems from…

Star Wars The Force Awakens had small surprises

One of the biggest surprises of the film was Actress Daisy Ridley which shows both action and acting skills as a charismatic and watchable Rey, who is an orphan girl on a desert planet who shows a natural gift for using “the force”. A little too natural if you ask me. How is she able to learn how to fight with a light saber after touching one for the first time a few days earlier. She is able to duel and defeat a Sith which has been in training for considerable time? Additionally, who was her family that enabled her to survive on this desolate planet? Why was she waiting for someone to return to her on this planet?

Another character Finn, which is a storm trooper who suddenly grows a conscience and ditches “The First Order” white armor for a life of heroism is probably my least favorite in the movie. Why did he have a change of heart and want to be a hero instead of a storm trooper? How does this just happen out of thin air? And don’t even get me started on Finn knowing how to operate a light saber and almost defeating a Sith lord. Can anyone just pick up a light saber these days and know how to fight like a Jedi? This notion was just ridiculous and frustrating in this movie.

My least favorite character in the new Star Wars The Force Awakens was definitely the villain, Kylo Ren, which was a terrible dorky version of Darth Vader. For some reason he hates his father (Han Solo), but we are never told why. For that matter we are never told how the re-emergence of the Sith Lords came about. He is just a mad kid that knows the dark side of the force. His character seems more powerful than the emperor at times, and weaker than a 10 week old puppy at others. I didn’t like the character or actor for that matter.

Unless the purpose of this film was just a poor attempt to tee-up future films in this series it left you mind boggled and dying for answers. I am a big Star Wars fan, and although this film did have its entertaining moments it was my least Star Wars film yet.
