For those of you that know me, I am a huge Steve Jobs fan. I have read just about every book about him, and seen every movie (as far as I know) that centered their focus around him. I am a fan of a lot of what Steve Jobs stood for, and appreciated his unique approach and focus to just about everything he did. There is a lot we can learn from Steve Jobs, and not just the tech geeks out there, but everyone.
Here are a few of my favorite marketing and business strategies we can learn from Steve Jobs.
Focus
After Steve Jobs was ousted from his his own company when he rejoined Apple Inc. in 1997 he let it be known that Apple’s inability to reach its full potential as a company was because the company was trying to do too many things at the same time. There was lack of focus on making one product line great and it was draining energy and productivity was facing an all time low. This is probably the easiest trap we all fall into sometimes. Every idea may sound great at first, but if you can’t execute properly on even one of them it will be difficult to have success. As an internet marketer or business owner you need to understand your business niche and give 100% focus to it. It is not just okay to say “No”, it is down right necessary sometimes.
Culture & Innovation
This is probably one lesson that I hold closest to my heart and why my career path has me on the course it does now. Get innovative and make sure you develop an innovative approach and culture. Lead your colleagues and staff down the road of constantly trying to innovate. It is a mentality that you constantly foster and promote. Try out new techniques, do research, have think tank sessions, and do not fall into the trap of what I call “maintenance mode”. I have seen companies lose sight of this, and although some of them have gone on to be very successful who knows what else they could have done.
Time
Jobs left this earth when he was only 56. Only 56! It is important to not over complicate things to the point the rest of the world passes you by. Don’t rush something out that is garbage either, but it can be easy to let yourself over complicate a project. Get a first release out there and keep it “Simple” for the user. Let them fall in love with its intuitiveness and then start adding bells and whistles. Learn from your Customers, know what they want or figure out what they need that they don’t even know themselves.
I could make this list go on forever, but these are 3 of my favorite strategies that Steve Jobs taught us.
